“A house divided against itself cannot stand.” - Lincoln c.1858
Lincoln might of given his speech on racial equality over 150 years ago, but it’s meaning still stands true today. In Zaccho Dance Theatre’s performance of “The Monkey and the Devil” at YBCA, simple movements and subtle colors left lasting impressions.
Dancers pivoted around on two halves of what seemed like two sections of the same house. The dancers slow yet forceful movements invoked this audience member to think about what divisions are still present in our world today. We might have come a long way from 1858 when President Lincoln made his famous speech, but have we really learned to stand together? Are our houses still divided?
